After the successful product launch in France in January, site expansion of a satisfied customer, and more than 23 million eggs scanned; a new installation with three modules of the Genus Focus in-ovo sexing is installed at LOHMANN Deutschland Hatchery, located in Dorum. It will be commercially operational in December.

The Genus Focus for in-ovo sexing is powered by Orbem (Deep Tech Munich company) and Vencomatic Group (partner for turn-key poultry solutions). It uses a combination of MRI and AI technologies to determine the sex of a chicken embryo in just one second. The Genus Focus works in a contactless, contamination-risk-free manner and has produced reliable and dependable in-ovo sexing for hatcheries and farmers.

"We are very excited to install our first Genus Focus for in-ovo sexing in Germany. We want to revolutionize the poultry industry in an animal welfare-friendly and sustainable manner. This installation allows us to offer chicks to the German market according to the KAT-certification." said Dr. Pedro Gómez, Managing Director of Orbem.

The Genus Focus provides a contactless and KAT-compliant solution in agreement with the results of the latest German study on pain perception in the chicken embryo. This study is the basis for the amendment to the Animal Welfare Use Animal Regulation, which will come into force on January 1, 2024.

Dr. Lotte van de Ven, CEO of Vencomatic Group (VMG) and animal science expert, comments: "This pain perception study confirms our belief that Genus Focus solution is the best contactless option for the poultry sector, animal welfare and biosecurity. The adjustments to the German regulation allowing in-ovo sexing up to and including day 12 opens up new opportunities, and not just in Germany but to hatcheries across the globe."

The solution determines the biological sex of embryos without affecting their hatchability. It is a complete trolley-to-trolley automated solution that uses the world-leading hatchery automation machinery from Vencomatic Group. The technology is applicable for white and brown layers, no matter their flock's age. In-ovo sexing is only the beginning of the Genus Focus journey; with its AI-powered MRI technology, the poultry industry is on the edge of a revolution, as it opens the door to invaluable applications and the autonomous hatchery of the future.
